It's usually beneficial to put all your residential areas on slow roads and then have fast roads cutting across those areas. You can take advantage of this by discouraging traffic from using roads by downgrading them to slow roads, and encouraging them to use roads by upgrading them to faster roads. most two lane roads have a speed limit of 40 kmph (gravel road is 30kmph) and most 4 lane roads have a speed limit of 50kmph. Two lane roads are typically lower speed limit than 4 lane roads. If you don't separate these, cars pulling in and out of buildings will slow down the traffic that's just travelling through the road. Ideally, you don't want cars driving down a residential road if they're not going to stop in that area, you want cars driving around those areas. You need to think about the road's function.
